The Hero in Dragon Quest VIII is an 18 year old, low-ranking royal guardsman in Castle Trodain. He was one of the small band who survived Dhoulmagus' deadly attack, along with his current traveling companions Trode, Medea and Munchie, the faithful mouse who lives in the Hero's bag. After defeating Dhoulmagus, the Hero continued to seek a way to lift the curse on Trode, Medea and Castle Trodain.
The Hero is a versatile character, as equally proficient in armed combat as he is in using healing spells and support magic. His preferred weapons are swords, spears and boomerangs. The Hero's default name is Eight referencing the title of the game, Dragon Quest VIII.
Appearance
The Hero of Dragon Quest VIII has long green boots, and green pants. He has a blue shirt, and a orange jacket, bearing a striking resemblance to Goku and Gohan from the Dragon Ball series. He has a belt, and a green bag, which his pet mouse sleeps in, and where he stores all of his items. He has a sheath on his back, brown hair and black eyes and a red bandanna on the top of his head.
Personality
Like all Dragon Questheroes, the Hero is perpetually silent throughout the game. However, his is pure-hearted, and will help anyone in need of help.
BiographyMain GamesDragon Quest VIII
The Hero is chivalrous, stoic, abstentious, demurring, humble, courageous, indefatigable, and strong. In contrast to heroes of other games, this Hero dresses very casually, a consequence of his lowborn upbringing as opposed to being royalty or some kind of chosen one. Hero's greatness is gained through moral uprightness, rather than through divine birthright.
He also does not appear to wear any kind of armour (irrespective of whatever he may actually have equipped). His red bandanna has become one of his iconic features. Dragon Quest VIII has a character's in-game appearance change based on their weapon and shield, a first for the series.

After the defeat of Rhapthorne, the Hero will be promoted as the head guard in castle Trodain. He will be assigned the task to accompany princess Medea to Savella Cathedral for her wedding to prince Charmles. Depending on whether the Argon Ring is in possession, the ending differs. The ring may be attained in the Hero's side quest.
This side quest reveals the Hero's origin story in the Dragovian Sanctuary. After defeating the Lord of the Dragovians, Chen Mui will admit to being the Hero's maternal grandfather. The Hero is actually the union of a human and Dragovian, the father being Eltrio, the missing prince from the Kingdom of Argonia and the mother being Chen Mui's daughter, Xia.
When the Hero came of age, the Dragovian Elders decided to exile him from the sanctuary with his memories sealed off. This seal takes on the form of a curse which displaces other curses making the Hero less susceptible to curses compare to others. Unwilling to let his grand child live alone in the human world, Chen Mui agreed to take the form of a mouse to accompany him.
Once Chen Mui gives the Hero the Argon Ring, the alternate ending will be unlocked. Instead of helping Medea run away, king Clavius permits the Hero to replace Charmles in fulfilling the royal marriage with Medea.
It is revealed throughout the course of the story that the Hero is indeed the Chosen One. The Hero is not performing magnanimous and valiant acts to attain greatness, but it is natural for one as great as he to perform all of these things.
Traits & Abilities
Curse Resistance - The Hero has a natural immunity to curses.
Munchie's Breath - The Hero is the only party member that may feed cheese to Munchie in battle to use Munchie's Breath. Using any cheese as an item takes regular priority to execute and may only be used twice per battle.
Call Team - After clearing Rank E in the Monster Arena, Morrie will reward the Hero with the ability to call his monster team in the battlefield. This ability costs 10 MP and will always be executed first in the following round. However, each monster team may only be called once per battle.

Skill Tips
Swords pay off if you are in pursuit of metal monsters, with Metal Slash (30 points) being particularly useful. If you accumulate 100 points in swords and courage you learn the almighty Gigagash, although this takes quite some time to achieve. The Hero is allowed to use a variety of different swords throughout the game. Swords are very good in situations against bosses. They become even more useful when you learn Falcon Slash (52 Points) which makes you attack twice for 0 mp. With the use of that skill and a sword called the Uber Falcon Blade It is possible to hit 4 strikes in one turn of the Hero attacking.
Note: It is highly recommended to never reach 100 in Any skill because it takes too many points that can be applied in a different skill set.
Spears are ideal for hunters of metal monsters in particular, with Thunder Thrust (12 points) and Lightning Thrust (59 points). The Multithrust (25 points) is also worth a try against single enemies. Spears are extremely useful in the beginning of the game so most players prioritize as such. This is commonly used if Yangus uses Scythes.
Boomerangs are a real boon in the beginning of the game because they attack all enemies. It is highly recommended to get boomerangs to 52 points in order to get superthrow which allows the Hero to hit everyone for 150% damage with no damage decline.
Fisticuffs is largely ineffectual to the other skills, although some actions are worth a try like Thin Air (42 points). The Hero can only make a real impression when he learns Attack + 50 (100 points). It is recommended that Jessica and/or Yangus learn fisticuffs for Thin Air making it obsolete for the Hero.
Courage is extremely useful as a means of learning traits that reduce MP consumption (at 56 and 90 points). Don't ignore the advanced attacks either (Zap, 48 points and Kazap at 100 points), or the Omniheal spell at 82 points.

Munchie
Munchie is the pet mouse of The Hero, and usually rides around in his coat pocket. He displays different abilities when given particular types of cheese by The Hero, and sometimes helps out by traveling through cracks to travel through areas too small for the party. Upon playing post game, information pertaining to Munchie is revealed.

GameplayNew features
Tension system
There is a new Dragon Ball-inspired tension system, allowing combatants to spend a turn 'Psyching Up' which will build up 'tension'. Tension will increase the power level of their next attack or spell. Tension can be charged repeatedly (up to 4 levels), increasing attack power in each stage. There is a new party AI option to focus on using high-tension attacks, replacing the old 'Leave it to me' option. Tension can be used to overcome a monster's resistance to physical or elemental attacks.
Attempting to reach the fourth, 'super-high tension' state has a chance of failure, depending on the character's level. Also, some monsters are able to instantly reach the third stage of tension, and will then repeatedly attempt to reach the super-high level.
Skill system
Each character has five skill values that can increase during the course of the game; three are associated with the character's three favored weapon types, one with unarmed combat, and one with the character's special ability. Skill points awarded on level-up, or when using a skill seed, can be distributed among the five skills by the player. Increasing a skill beyond certain fixed levels grants additional powers and bonuses to statistics when the player is using an appropriate type of weapon.
Alchemy
At a certain point in the game, the party receives an Alchemy Pot. This device can be used to combine two items into a third (usually more powerful) item following various recipes. The combination takes a certain amount of time, depending on the power of the combined item and the level of the pot. This 'time' only advances as the party moves. Later in the game, the pot is upgraded to hold three items, allowing additional, even more powerful recipes.
An invalid recipe will be rejected immediately without consuming the items, allowing the player to experiment to find new recipes. In the Bonus Dungeon, the player can choose to take a pot that can mix items instantly as a prize for defeating the Lord Of The Dragovians.
New recipes (or clues to new recipes) are revealed in various books and scraps of paper found throughout the game. All recipes the player has discovered are listed in a 'recipe book' accessed through the alchemy menu; recipes which are only partially known (from a clue) will have some item names replaced with '????.'

The alchemy pot cannot be used when in a dungeon or when Medea gets 'horsenapped'
Vehicles
Vehicles are shown at their actual size, and the world map is scaled down appropriately when they are in use.
The ship has a bridge which it uses to dock with the land, and its altitude can be changed to match the shorter cliffs, if necessary.
The other available vehicles are a great sabrecat steed (summoned with a magic bell), which moves much faster than the hero, allowing the party to move further between random encounters (although they still occur at the same rate), and a Godbird's soulstone, which allows the party to turn into birds.
Although the party has a wagon throughout the game, it has no effect on gameplay, since the party is essentially fixed throughout the game. Also, it is not normally shown on the display.

The hunt for Dhoulmagus
Dragon Quest VIII begins when the evil jester Dhoulmagus steals a sceptre from Trodain Castle. With the cursed artifact, he transforms the inhabitants of Trodain into plant-like statues, as well as changing the king into a toad-like monster and the princess into a horse, while covering the majority of the castle in large, green magical thorns. The Hero. a young Trodain guardsman, is the only resident to remain uncursed. Accompanying the cursed king and princess, he hunts Dhoulmagus, in hopes of restoring Trodain to its former glory. The Hero is eventually joined on his quest by three companions: a scarred, inarticulate bandit named Yangus, a young magician named Jessica, and Angelo, a rapier-wielding Templar knight and self-proclaimed ladies' man. During their travels, the party runs into Dhoulmagus several times. A couple of these encounters involve Dhoulmagus killing someone beloved by members of the Hero's party. Individuals slain by Dhoulmagus include Alistair (Jessica's brother) and Abbot Francisco, the head of Maella Abbey where Angelo lives. The party finally tracks down Dhoulmagus to the Dark Ruins, only to find a powerful dark magic barrier preventing them from entering. A group of fighters from Baccarat, who wish to slay Dhoulmagus in retaliation for the murder of the town's mayor, Golding, also arrive at the ruins and advise the party to seek the Magic Mirror of Argonia in order to enter the ruins.
In the process of gaining the mirror, the party is asked to aid the current heir to the Kingdom of Argonia, Prince Charmles, in his initiation, a task that involves him in retrieving an Argon heart from a lizard in the royal hunting ground. It is also revealed that he is supposed to be married by arrangement to Princess Medea, due to a promise made many years ago. However, the Prince's offhand and arrogant behaviour, both before and during the trial, leaves the entire party uncertain about it. The prince first forces the party to fight increasingly large Argon Lizards on his behalf, each time considering the hearts dropped to be too small, and then after finally being satisfied with the crystal dropped from a huge Great Argon Lizard, changes his mind and buys an even larger fake from a black market dealer. King Clavius admits to the party that knowing this gives him doubts about his son's suitability for the marriage, but gives them the Mirror in payment for their assistance.
Upon charging the Mirror, the party finally enters the Dark Ruins, where they find Dhoulmagus recuperating, barely able to contain the sceptre's power. He then separates into three identical doppelgangers of himself and attacks. After his defeat, he then tries to curse the party with the sceptre, but the hero is again unaffected by the curse, blocking the burst of thorns and thus protecting the other party members. Dhoulmagus then uses his menacing power to change into a hideous creature. However, even with his new powers, he is no match for the might of the heroes, and suffers a second defeat, crumbling into dust leaving behind only the stolen sceptre. However, the party finds that even with his defeat, the curse still has not been lifted. Concluding that something else must be maintaining the curse, they return to Argonia again, with Jessica picking up the sceptre as they exit.
The secret of the sceptre
The next morning, the Hero and the others find to their surprise that Jessica is missing. While searching for her, the party enters a town called Arcadia, arriving just in time to save a magician named Dominico from an apparently-possessed Jessica wielding the sceptre. After chastising David, his young servant, Dominico sends the heroes to find the Kran Spinels to aid in warding off Jessica. Once the heroes return with the jewels, Dominico uses them to create a more effective barrier against Jessica. While he prepares the incantation to erect the barrier, the party engages Jessica outside in an attempt to stall her, discovering in the process that her true objective is David, an heir of one of the great Seven Sages. After the battle, Dominico's barrier is able to release Jessica from her possession, knocking her unconscious.
After recovery, Jessica reveals what her possessor had planned, as well as giving it a name -- Rhapthorne, The Lord of Darkness. His soul had previously been imprisoned inside the sceptre by the Seven Sages, and he plots to remove the seals by killing their heirs as soon as possible. At that point, the party realizes the sceptre is missing. They rush over to Dominico's estate, only to see that Rhapthorne has succeeded in mortally wounding David after taking control of Dominico's dog, Sir Leopold, as his next host. After Rhapthorne flees, David utters his final words, as a repentant and grieving Dominico laments over him. With only two heirs left to kill, the possessed Sir Leopold absconds to the snowy mountain valley of the north. An old woman named Marta, who happens to be the one of the two remaining heirs, lives in the wintry countryside.
After running an errand for Marta and finding her son Marek, the party comes back to Marta's house only to see it set ablaze by Sir Leopold. Holding her son Marek hostage, Sir Leopold forces Marta to come out and face him. He manages to kill her, and flies away to find the last living heir.
On the advice of Marek, the party enlists the aid of the Godbird Empyrea. With the power of the Godbird's Soulstone granting them flight, and the dark tree leaf from Tyran Gully sensing Rhapthorne's evil spirit, the party tracks Sir Leopold down to the Lord High Priest's mansion and engage him. After defeating the possessed dog, he loses his grip on the sceptre, and dies. The Lord High Priest goes into shock, and faints. Meanwhile, Marcello (the new Abbot, and Angelo's half-brother) enters, and frames the party for attempting to assassinate the Lord High Priest, and has them exiled to Purgatory Island. Marcello picks up the sceptre, but manages to resist Lord Rhapthorne's evil influence. He assumes his position of the Lord High Priest thereafter.
ImprisonedMap Of Dragon Quest 8
The party manages to escape from Purgatory Island, returning to face Marcello on the Holy Isle of Neos, and defeats him. In his weakened state, Marcello gives in to Rhapthorne's influence. With the heirs of the Seven Sages killed, Rhapthorne is resurrected in flesh and blood. He destroys Neos to raise the Black Citadel from beneath it, and raises it into the sky to stage his attack upon the world. The heroes battle their way through the Citadel and defeat Rhapthorne in his first body, triggering the Citadel itself to crumble in an attempt to destroy them. However, as they escape, Rhapthorne is able to unleash his full power and incorporate the Black Citadel into himself, transforming into a massive devil looming over the land, before breaking the barrier to the Shadow Realm, unleashing his servants, and sealing himself behind a huge shield. Empyrea calls upon the heroes to destroy Rhapthorne once and for all. The Sceptre of Trodain, imbued with Empyrea's essence, is now an essential weapon for the party, able to unlock the power of the seven orbs containing the spirits of the Seven Sages, to penetrate into Rhapthorne's mighty barrier and engage him in mortal combat. After finally ending the reign of Rhapthorne, the party restored peace to the world. King Trode and Princess Medea are changed back to their human forms, and the curse of Trodain, along with its thorns, is lifted and removed.
The princess's wedding
Seven months later, the Hero is assigned to escort Princess Medea to her arranged wedding with Prince Charmles of Argonia. After reuniting with his three friends, the hero sets sail for Savella Cathedral with the king and princess. Prince Charmles meets with the entourage personally, and forbids the party from attending the ceremony within the Cathedral. On the day of the wedding, the Hero manages to slip into the cathedral with Yangus' help. However, the Princess is nowhere to be found. The Hero escapes, and finds the Princess at the cathedral courtyard waiting for him. They return to Trodain in a carriage steered by King Trode, and live happily ever after.

Alternate ending
An 'alternate ending' can be achieved once the first ending has been viewed, which unlocks the Dragovian Realm. A well-experienced party of heroes can challenge the Lord of the Dragovians at the Heavenly Dais. If successful, the hero's true origins are revealed, and the alternate ending will replace the first ending, where the player defeats Rhapthorne again. In the alternate ending, the Hero is revealed as the son of the lost prince of Argonia. His mother was a Dragovian maiden who escaped to the human world and met Clavius' older brother, but her father did not agree to the relationship and took her home. Following after, the Prince died just short of the Dragovian homeland. The hero was born shortly afterward, but sentenced to exile in the human world, as his birth took the life of his mother. Ashamed for his actions, the maiden's father went with his only surviving kin, as the mouse Munchie. Upon defeating the Dragovian lord, who had become mad after trying to abandon his human form, gives the Hero his father's ring.
King Clavius, after some contemplation, acknowledges the hero's right to marry the Princess after seeing the ring, which allows him to finally feel at peace with his lost brother. The two are wed at Savella Cathedral, much to the scorn of Charmles, who is finally confronted by his father over his initiation test earlier in the story. The newlywed couple come out of the cathedral together and embrace each other, much to the surprise of the other party members. They return to Trodain in the same fashion as the first ending, and live happily ever after.

Development
Like the other games in the series, Dragon Quest VIII's designers include Yuji Horii as scenario director, Akira Toriyama as the art designer, and Koichi Sugiyama as the music composer.
Unlike the original Japanese version, the North American and European localisations of the game mark a departure from previous Dragon Quest titles, due to the inclusion of voice acting in certain parts of the adventure pertaining to the advancement of the storyline. The game nevertheless retains the series' tradition of allowing the player to name the lead character, reconciling the two by having the voice acting script skip all instances of the hero's name (e.g., the line, 'Okay, [Hero], my boy..' appears onscreen, while the voice acting says, 'Okay, my boy..'), and occasionally replacing the name with Yangus' nickname for the hero, 'guv' (as in 'governor,' pronounced with a Cockney accent) In addition, small changes, such as the removal of the traditional 8-bit sound effects that accompany attacks, and magic abilities, were made. Despite other games in the series being edited during localisation for North America, Dragon Quest VIII has no editing in it. The English translation is credited to Plus Alpha Translations and AltJapan.
Several characters from previous Dragon Quest games make a cameo appearance, among which are the Fighter and Warrior from Dragon Quest III; Ragnar, Healie, and Torneko (here called Torneko Taloon, a combination of the names by which he's known in Japan and America) from Dragon Quest IV; and the legendary bird Ramia from Dragon Quest III. There is even an allusion to the Dracolord (Dragonlord) from the original Dragon Quest present during the course of the game.
Localisation
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was released in North America on November 15, 2005, and shipped with a playable Final Fantasy XII demo disc. Additions and changes to the North American version of Dragon Quest VIII include: voice acting, new animations, enhanced music and sound effects, additional spells and attacks, and a new menu interface. It was also the first game in the Dragon Quest series to bear the original, Japanese 'Dragon Quest' name (rather than 'Dragon Warrior') in North America. Dragon Quest's North American name was changed, due to a trademark conflict with the role-playing gameDragonQuest, which was published by wargame publisher Simulations Publications in the 1980s until the company's bankruptcy in 1982 and purchase by TSR, Inc., which then published it as an alternate pen-and-paper RPG line to Dungeons & Dragons until 1987.
In 2003, Square Enix registered the Dragon Questtrademark in the US, making the 'Dragon Warrior' name obsolete. Thus, this installment of the series was the first after 2003 to be released outside of Japan and to receive the word 'Quest' in its title.
A demo disc for Dragon Quest VIII was released in America during the fall of 2005 through certain venues, including Shonen Jump magazine. Dragon Quest VIII is also the first flagship Dragon Quest game to be released in Europe. It was released in Europe on April 13, 2006, under the title Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King, dropping the sequel number. Unlike the North American version, the European version does not contain a Final Fantasy XII demo.

A treasure map is a specialty item in Dragon Quest IX, which can be acquired in a number of different ways. When opened, a treasure map marks a particular spot on the world map where a secret grotto can be found. Treasure maps come in 2 varieties: normal and legacy boss. Overall, treasure maps play a key role in extending Dragon Quest IX's post-game by adding enormous amounts of additional content.
Map description
When viewed on the item screen, each treasure map displays description data on the top screen of the DS. This data contains the following:
A spoiler draws near! Click 'show' to display, otherwise run away!
World map locations
Each treasure maps displays a location on the world map that the player must find in order to access the map's grotto/dungeon. There is a fixed number of possible world map locations where a map's grotto can appear. For almost all maps, the grotto location is randomly selected from all the possible world map locations. However, maps shared using Tag Mode or by completing quests retain the same world map location.
To access a map's grotto, the player must find the location marked by the map on the overworld. When the map is activated, meaning it is in use and displayed on the top screen, the player will see an exclamation point above the hero's head on the bottom screen when they are in the correct location. Pressing the 'A' button when this happens will cause the map's grotto to appear. Pressing 'A' again, enters the grotto.
Once a map is put away, its grotto also disappears from the overworld. However, activating the map again allows the player to re-activate the grotto. The world map location of a map is permanent after it has been received by the player.
For images of some possible world map locations for each map, see List of treasure map grotto locations in Dragon Quest IX.
For a useful site with all possible world map locations, click here.
Types of mapsNormal maps
Normal treasure maps lead to grottos/dungesons which consist of a number of floors containing enemies and possibly treasure chests, as well as a boss in the final basement. Each normal map is given a descriptive title which includes a level number. This level is a measure of difficulty for the associated grotto. All normal maps which are not received via Tag Mode are randomly generated based on various criteria. See #Normal map generation mechanics for a full description of the normal map generation process.
Legacy boss maps
Legacy Boss maps are treasure maps which lead to grottoes/dungeons which contain only 1 floor holding a legacy boss from Dragon Quest I - VIII. These maps are considered bonus material and are only received using Tag Mode, by completing specific quests, such as #151, and as item drops from certain other treasure map bosses. There are exactly 13 legacy boss maps in Dragon Quest IX.
The Legacy Bosses are unusual in that you can give them the EXP normally obtained from defeating them so they can level up. This increases their strength in battle, and adjusts their treasure drops.
Methods to acquire mapsTag Mode
Treasure maps can be received via Tag Mode with other copies of Dragon Quest IX. When entering Tag Mode, each player is able to choose a single treasure map which they possess to share with other games. This map will be 'copied', meaning the original player does not lose it by sharing it on Tag Mode. This method of sharing treasure maps is also used for various Dragon Quest IX events in order to share maps. The 2 most famous maps traded via Tag Mode are the Masayuki map and the Locker map.
Quests
The following quests give a treasure map as a reward for their completion.
Note that quests 121 and higher are only available through the DQVC. See List of quests in Dragon Quest IX for more info. Treasure map boss item drop
After defeating certain treasure map bosses multiple times, the possibility exists that the boss will drop a specific treasure map. However, only 5 bosses have the possibility of dropping a map and each of the 5 has a specific map which they drop.
A spoiler draws near! Click 'show' to display, otherwise run away!
The drop percentages are as follows:
King Schott
King Schott of Stornway Castle will give the player 1 random treasure map when speaking with him after completing the game.
Completion of a normal treasure map
Each normal treasure map has a specific number of floors, always culminating with a boss monster on the final basement. Defeating this boss monster gives the player another normal treasure map. This is the primary method of obtaining new treasure maps, as there is no limit to the number of maps a player can complete. A new map is given each time the player completes a normal treasure map, however, each map must be closed and reopened before it can be completed again. For information on how each normal map is generated, see Normal map generation mechanics.
Normal map generation mechanics
After completing a normal treasure map, another map is randomly generated and given to the player. The mechanics of how a new map is generated are somewhat complex.
1. Determining quality
Quality is a computed number between 2 and 248 that is later used to determine how good the next map will be. A higher quality value yields more rare maps. The formula for quality is:
The hero's highest vocation level is the highest level they currently hold in any single vocation. The hero's highest number of revocations is the highest number of times they have used revocation in any single vocation. Note that revocation is the process used to change from level 99 in any single vocation back to level 1. The high and low values for quality are thus computed:
Note that p() in these examples is negated by the max and min values of 2 and 248 respectively.
2. Grotto content generation
After computing the quality value, the game randomly selects one of 32768 maps for that quality value. Since quality can range from 2 to 248, the total normal map possibilities can be computed as:
Hence the reason high quality maps are so rare. Even with the highest quality value (248), there is still only a 1/32768 chance of getting a specific map. For higher quality values, the possible maps contain grottos which are much longer and hold more powerful enemies, bosses, and treasures. The following table shows the relation between the quality value and the map contents.
Using this table, the game randomly selects an eligible value from each column according to the computed quality value. For example, for the highest quality brackets (201-220 and 221-248), a random boss is selected from all 12 possible bosses.
a. Monster Rank
The monster rank value is used both for determining monsters and treasure chest rank within the grotto. Higher values equate to more difficult monsters and better chest contents.
Monster Rank increases in value on lower floors of a grotto. The increase can summarized as:
More simply stated, the rank increases by 1 for every 4 floors completed. So for the largest grotto (16 floors), the break down would be:
Therefore, rank S (12) is the highest any grotto can contain, and can only appear on floors 13-16 if the Monster Rank on floor 1-4 is Rank C (9). Also note that not all monsters within a particular rank may appear on a floor. Which monsters within the rank appear and their frequency is determined randomly. This fact is tied to the popularity of the Masayuki map, as it contains a floor where only Metal King Slimes appear.
For the list of monsters in each rank, see List of treasure map monster ranks in Dragon Quest IX.
b. Treasure chest rank
Treasure chest rank is derived from the monster rank value. Treasure chest rank only has 10 values rather than 12.
Treasure chest rank is determined on a per chest basis. This means that for a floor with monster rank 5, each chest could have a rank between 2 and 5. Each chest permanently retains its rank, so a rank 8 chest will always contain rank 8 items. The treasure map must be closed and reopened in order for chests to respawn their items.
The number of actual chests on any one floor is determined randomly. This variability in the number of chests and their rank is the reason for the Locker map's popularity, as it has a high amount of rank 9 and 10 chests.
For details treasure chest rank items, List of treasure map treasure chest ranks in Dragon Quest IX.
c. Normal map bosses
There are 12 possible bosses for normal treasure maps. These bosses are indexed below in increasing order of difficulty:
A spoiler draws near! Click 'show' to display, otherwise run away!
The first ten bosses are implied at several points throughout the game (and stated outright by Fowleye) to be aspects of the Almighty, who was fragmented by Corvus and sealed into the grottos to ensure that he would not regain his power.
After defeating a boss, the treasure map must be closed and reopened in order for the boss to reappear.
For a full list of treasure map bosses, see List of treasure map bosses in Dragon Quest IX.
5. Map name generation
The treasure map name is generated based on the treasure map grotto contents and is structured as follows:
Each portion of the map name represents an attribute of the grotto contents. Since the grotto contents are determined by the quality value listed above, the name is determined by randomly selecting from the eligible options for each portion of the name according to the grotto contents.
Level
The level formula is:
So for a map that has 8 floors (not including boss floor), monster rank 5, and boss 5 the level would be computed as:
So the level will be between 37 and 47, depending on the random value generated between -5 and 5.
Prefix
Prefix is related to the rank of the treasure map grotto. Rank is determined by the quality value computed above, and the prefix is randomly selected from the possible prefixes associated with the base rank.
There is a fair amount of ambiguity with each rank, as a map with rank 8 could have 10 out of 16 possible prefixes.
Environment
Environment is the word in the treasure map title that describes the 'theme' of the treasure map grotto. There are 5 possible themes:
There are a variety of environment words used to describe each of these different themes. The environment word used is related to the number of floors the grotto contains.
The ambiguity is high related to number of floors. A grotto with 11 floors could have any environment word except for Tunnel and Cave.
Suffix
The suffix of the treasure map name is related to the number of the boss on the last floor of the grotto.
Treasure map calculators
Calculators have been developed to compute the possible values related to treasure maps using the mechanics discussed above.
Obtaining better maps
A common question is how to obtain better maps. The answer to this question is to improve the quality value computed when each new map is generated. This can be done by doing the following:
